After about an hour sitting I went out and re started the bike and rode it around the yard. I looked at the tach. wiring and nothing looks out of place. It may have rolled a 7. It's the original that's been getting vibrated silly since '78.
That's the strange part. I checked for continuity between the wire and ground and got nothing before plugging it to the coil while the engine was running. It worked for a minute then back fires and it quit. I unplugged it and it started again. I'll have to pull the tank and wiggle the wires with the Ohm meter connected.

Sounds like the feed wire from the coil is grounded in the tach and cuts voltage to the plugs.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm probably going to rewire the entire thing anyway.
